5 Ways to improve work-life balance

5 Ways to improve work-life balance

A healthy work-life balance is something that is crucial to maintain in the current corporate climate, but how exactly are you meant to do that? And if you’re in a management role, how can you encourage people to think about their work-life balance more?

According to our Wellbeing at Work survey over a quarter (29%) of those in full-time employment in the UK are unhappy in their job.1

1. Don’t be afraid to unplug

With the ability to work from home ever present in this day and age one thing that’s increasingly difficult to do  – is simply switch off. We think that mentality needs to be changed. Occasionally there is nothing wrong with disconnecting from the outside world despite it becoming harder to do! Not being able to switch off could actually be hindering productivity. If you’ve noticed that people at your workplace aren’t switching off when they should, maybe some of our care packages would be a good place to start when it comes to encouraging people to start focusing on the life aspect of their work-life balance a bit more.

2. Set boundaries and work hours

Reinforce the idea that once you're physically out of the office, you should have mentally left it as well. Turn your work email notifications off, put your phone on silent. It’s not unreasonable to disconnect from work when you’re not there. It also doesn’t hurt to try and get your colleagues to do the same.

3. Create a flexible work environment

If you’re in management, you also have a responsibility to make colleagues feel like they’re allowed to maintain a healthy work-life balance. Something that’s becoming more and more common in professional work environments nowadays is the idea of more flexible work. Let people know that they will still be valued at work if they prioritise life every once and a while.

4. Integrate work-life balance into work culture

Another thing you can do from a management position and encourage from any position is reinforcing the idea of maintaining that healthy work-life balance into your work culture. It shouldn’t be taboo for someone to ignore work requests outside of their working hours. Try to ensure everyone in the office is comfortable separating their life at work from their free time.

5. Talk!

Lastly but most certainly not the least important way to improve work life balance is to talk. At Brown Paper Packages we think that communication is the key to resolving almost every issue. Engage in conversation to find out whether some people are going above and beyond to work and remind them that it’s not always necessary to do so. Encourage an environment in which people feel comfortable speaking up when they're feeling pressured to work outside of their regular hours, and feel like they aren’t getting enough time for themselves.
