Tell us a little bit about Cognitive Hypnotherapy and how you came to work in this area.
I first came across Cognitive Hypnotherapy when following an attack, I was diagnosed with PTSD. It helped my recovery enormously and opened my eyes to a new way of life full of gratitude and positivity. I found it so amazing in fact, that I decided to leave behind my stressful job in the film industry and train as a Cognitive Hypnotherapist myself. Cognitive Hypnotherapy is different from traditional hypnotherapy as it uses recent discoveries and ideas from Evolutionary Psychology, Positive Psychology, Cognitive Theory and NLP and incorporates them into a modern idea of hypnosis to provide a framework for therapy. As a therapist I do not advocate one single approach as the answer to all of life’s problems. It allows me to work with clients on a completely individual basis in order to create the change they want to see in the shortest time.
Why do people use Cognitive Hypnotherapy for and how can it help?
Cognitive Hypnotherapy can help people with all sorts of issues ranging from depression, anxiety, eating disorders, PTSD, confidence issues, phobias and fears. The list is endless. I work with clients to identify the root of their issue and use tools and techniques to help reframe it.
What motivated you to design your LSW Mind Cards?
One of the greatest differences I noticed both within my own recovery from PTSD and also with my clients was the small habits or changes built into the everyday. Making these small positive changes each day has a much more profound effect than trying to make big extravagant resolutions which are often difficult to stick to. Making small, positive choices gradually each day, then building them up repeatedly over time can help to create a wider sense of fulfilment and contentment overall. I wanted to create a product that would allow everyone to do this in a fun and easy way.
What are the benefits of using LSW Mind Cards?
Each pack of Mind Cards is split across five categories and each category has its own amazing benefits. Random acts of kindness, for example, can help to reduce stress and improve relationships. Gratitude exercises can improve self-esteem and encourage better sleep. Each category have their own benefits and used together they can have a powerful, positive effect on your sense of wellbeing.
How should people use your cards to get the most out of them?
Shuffle the pack so that all the categories are mixed together and each day, pick a card at random and take the action stated on the card. Using the cards regularly will help to remind you to make at least one positive action each day which in turn will train you to start looking out for the positives in each day.
What is your favourite card and why do you think this is?
I think my favourite card is the Ritual card for creating a ritual out of having a cup of tea. I have trained myself now to have a moment to myself each morning where I put aside my phone and the business of the day and just sit with my tea. I find it really calming and meditative, it really sets me up for whatever the day will throw at me.
If someone is going through a difficult time what small changes could they make to help them through this / what advice would you give...?
I think the best thing to do is to try to take off the pressure to continue as normal and to take each day as it comes. To slow down and give yourself permission to do whatever it is that will bring you a small burst of happiness in that moment. There shouldn’t be guilt attached to doing what makes you happy, it is really important when going through a difficult time to allow time for self-care and recuperation.
