The First Ever Care Package

The First Ever Care Package

Where care packages began

It may seem like care packages have been around forever, but the first ever care package came about at the end of World War 2, when CARE (Cooperative for Assistant and Relief Everywhere) began sending packages of food items to the millions starving in Europe after the war.

These packages were surplus, previously used to feed 10 soldiers at a time, that were no longer needed by the U.S army at the end of the war. They started off as food items, and soon expanded to include school suppliers, soap, medicine, and other items that could provide relief to the recipient. On 11th May 1946, 15,000 packages founded by CARE were sent to bring humanitarian aid to those starving in post-war Europe.

After the surplus packages were used up, American donations meant that CARE were able to assemble their own packages. Now Americans were able to send these packages to their loved ones, and even people they didn’t know.

What do care packages look like today?

The Birth of Brown Paper Packages

Brown paper packages came about in 2016, as a way of sending a practical gift to someone who needs support – something that can provide distractions, comfort, encouragement, and inspiration to those in a difficult place. Back in 2016, our founder Helen, birthed Brown Paper Packages, when her brother fell ill and she struggled to find a gift to offer him the life lift he needed.

This struggle led to Brown Paper Packages’ creation. Our care packages are carefully curated with the common aim to bring support, inspire and uplift. Our heartfelt books, pamper products, gardening items, nutritious snacks and other beautiful gifts are designed for you to make your loved one feel truly cared for, and bring them as much joy as possible.

Our build-a-box section allows you to personalise your box, to give your care package that extra bit of meaningful value. Take a look here.
