What to buy a new mum for herself

What to buy a new mum for herself

When someone announces the arrival of a new baby we relish at the opportunity to buy a cute outfit. However everyone seems to forget about what a new mum goes through herself. Here at Brown Paper Packages we encourage people to acknowledge this huge life change with a gift for mum. Not just baby. So, we decided to write this blog 'What to buy a new mum for herself' from experience.

The Baby Blues

When you become a new mum for the first, second or third time it is often an overwhelming experience. It is estimated that 70% of new mums experience the 'baby blues' within 2 weeks of giving birth. For 1 in 10 women this can continue into more serious postnatal depression.

It's therefore so important to acknowledge what she has been through. The right gift can encourage her to take the rest she needs to look after her new born baby.

So what can you buy for a new mum for herself

We always encourage our customers to acknowledge the huge physical undertaking mum has been through. Whether through journaling or simply taking a bath, it's thoughtful to encourage her to take a moment for herself.

So with that in mind take some time to find the right words to acknowledge what she herself has been through. Then if you are looking at what gift to buy her consider that she doesn't have much time. Being a new mum can be incredibly demanding on your time. Gifts that create quick and easy ways for her to take time out to feel good about herself are great. Whether giving birth naturally or under more medical supervision having a baby takes it's toll on your body.

Here are some gift ideas for a new mum to make her feel understood and cared for;

New Mum Journals

It's common for new mum's suffer with anxiety or feelings overwhelm in the early stages after giving birth. Writing down these feelings can help a new mum to reduce anxiety and recognise if the feelings are prolonged and need addressing.

New Mum Self-care books

Becoming a new mum for the first time can impact your confidence and self-esteem. Sometimes just reading that your circumstances and feelings are normal is a huge relief. Reading a book at night can also be a relaxing way to process the emotions of motherhood, avoiding excessive googling! The right book might also help her to focus on self-care, and give her the confidence to take time out.

New Mum Self-care products

There are many self-care products that can help encourage her to take a moment out for self-care. Perhaps a self-care hamper or new mum care package could be a thoughtful gift if you don't have time to wrap and deliver it yourself. A facemask or hair mask would be a lovely gift as our hair and skin can suffer after having a baby. Some bath salts could be the perfect excuse for her partner to run her a bath. Maybe a nice nail set or nail varnish as you can do this while relaxing watching the TV.

New Mum survival items

Breast feeding can be exhausting! A really nice water bottle that she can carry around to keep herself hydrated or lots of healthy snacks for energy would be a great way to help her to survive the drain on her resources. The addition of some vitamins and minerals will help her to replenish her body after giving birth or feeding when she is most likely to feel depleted.
