How to combat loneliness this Christmas: for yourself or others.

It’s safe to say a lot of us have experienced bouts of loneliness during the pandemic. Loneliness is linked to an increased risk of depression, anxiety and low self-esteem.

Therefore the team at Brown Paper Packages have decided to provide this guide on how to combat loneliness. Whether you’re struggling with it yourself, know someone who is this or want to volunteer to help others this festive period.

1. Volunteer to be a befriender

Age UK run a fantastic service where you can volunteer to keep an elderly isolated person company. All you need to do is dedicate half an hour a week whether in person or on the phone. For more info, click here.

2. Check in with a loved one

Whilst of course nothing beats the real thing, seeing your loved ones face even virtually will provide plenty of comfort. Tell each other your jolly jokes and reminisce over Christmases gone by.

Need some ideas? There is plenty of great programs out there that enable us to feel connected. For example, why not host a Netflix party with loved ones and you can all enjoy watching a film together?

Not a film fan? There are plenty of games that we can play with our friends remotely, for example words with friends. A great way to keep in touch and learn a thing or two!

3. Volunteer this Christmas!

If you want to help those in need this Christmas there are plenty of great initiatives to take part in

The charity Crisis work to provide warmth, food and shelter to homeless people over the festive period. For more info and to find a Crisis hub near you click here.

Want to volunteer from home? No problem- The Mix ( a charity that helps under 25’s are looking for remote volunteers, click here for more info).

4. Connect with others online

There are plenty of initiatives to being isolated people together at Christmas. Here’s a selection of some of the best out there...

  • Comedian Sarah Milican prides herself on providing company and comfort to those who are experiencing loneliness on Christmas. Use the #JoinIn  on Twitter to connect with others.
  • @selfloveliv on Instagram is hosting zoom parties on Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and Boxing Day, for those feeling lonely in the festive season.
  •  Send her the message “CHRISTMAS ZOOM” and your name on Instagram to get involved.
  • Join the online community Side by Side; a supportive space designed by the charity Mind to connect those struggling with their mental health.

5. Take a break from your phone and social media

  • Being on social media can be overwhelming, if you’re going through a tough time it's difficult to see people living “perfect” lives online.
  • Remember someone’s online image isn’t reality it's just a selection of their best moments and showing none of their lowest.
  • Schedule time in the evening away from your phone, take a walk or read a book anything that doesn’t involve looking at a screen.

6. Be kind to yourself

  • Take time to invest in some self-care, when going through a difficult time we’re more likely to be harder on ourselves.
  • Recognize you’re struggling and treat yourself with kindness and reach out to someone to let them know how you’re feeling.

7. Remember you’re not alone

Loneliness can be incredibly isolating, but remember you’re not alone. If you’re able reach out to loved ones and let them know how you’re feeling. If that’s not an option; join in with the various online events or click here to read about the resources out there to help end loneliness.

We hope this was helpful...

If you only get one takeaway from this guide, let it be this. YOU ARE NOT ALONE. Whether it’s connecting with loved ones online or contacting various charities for support and guidance, we want you to know that help is out there.
