How to : Long Distance Love

I’ve recently moved to Edinburgh to be closer to my partner, but before then we were in a long-distance relationship. These sorts of relationships can be difficult at times, you can’t just pop round to see your loved one when you fancy it or enjoy a daily routine together.

Valentines also can be a tricky time for long distance couples, around Valentine's we are bombarded with ads, songs and tv programmes that show happy couples spending time together. This media representation of what a content couple looks like can make those in long distance relationships feel isolated and lonely.

Now the long-distance aspect of my relationship is over, it’s given me time to reflect on what worked. Here are my top tips for long distance love...

1. Schedule calls

Each night my partner and I would call each other before bed. It wouldn’t always be a long call, but it would be a great way to check in and hear about their day. Another great way to feel connected to your partner is to face time, just seeing their face albeit digitally helps and makes you feel closer to them.

2. Online dates

Get creative with your date nights! An example of this could be taking part in an online escape room! If you share screens, you can look for clues together and it’s a great date night activity. Durham Escape Room have a great selection to choose from, click here to find out more...

3. Plan to do things at the same time

A brilliant way to feel close to your partner despite the distance is to do things together but apart. For example, you could both order takeaway from the same food chain and have an impromptu dinner date! If you're both feeling cooped up why don't you both take a walk and call each other, that way you're both getting fresh air and it's almost as if you're walking together.

4. Show them you care

There’s no better feeling than receiving something in the post. It would make my day to come home from uni and see a bunch of flowers waiting for me from my partner. It doesn’t have to be anything big, a card with a kind note inside can mean so much.

5. Treat them to one of our Valentine’s care packages

We have a great selection of thoughtful valentine’s gifts; we even offer Valentines next day delivery on February 13th in time for the special day. Check out our unique Valentines' gifts here

6. Have a chat about closing the gap

It’s a good idea for you and your partner to discuss when you’d like to live in the same city or closer to each other. Once you have this plan to "close the gap" it'll make the period of time you're apart a little easier as now you know it's only temporary.
