Loneliness on Valentine's Day

Valentine's day can be overwhelming, it can put pressure on single people and cause them to think that they should be in a relationship. For example, when scrolling through Instagram your feed might be flooded with marriage proposals, couples on holiday or lavish displays of affection. It can be difficult to not get swept up in all this and compare yourself to people online, especially if you are single and this can lead to feelings of loneliness.

It’s important to remind yourself that there are different types of love, not just romantic love and this love should be celebrated. Galantine's is a great example of this, Galantine's is celebrated on February 13th and it’s a day to celebrate friendships. After all your friendships are another form of love that can last a lifetime.

Here are some tips to on how to celebrate yourself and your friendships this Valentines...

Self-care

If you think Valentine's Day is going to be an emotionally straining day, why not book yourself in to a spa. It’ll be a great way to get some headspace and relax your body and mind.  If a spa is not your thing why not practice some other forms of self-care such as journaling, mediation or exercise. I’ve always found if I have a lot on my mind, journaling helps me to make sense of it and give me some peace.

See loved ones

Why not arrange a night in with your best pals? Get together and host a movie night. Instead of watching “traditional” valentine’s movies like Sleepless in Seattle or Notting Hill, why not watch some iconic films about friendship; click here for a list of movies about friendship.

Talk about your feelings

It’s ok to not feel ok. Check in with your friends and family, share with them how you’re feeling. By letting them that know that you’re struggling with loneliness and Valentine's pressure, they’ll be more likely to be there for you and check in more,

Remind yourself that social media isn’t real

Social media isn’t a reflection of reality, it’s a montage of people’s happiest moments with none of the tough bits. Someone could post a romantic post of their significant other but won’t mention the row they had over their cereal that morning.

Be there for someone else

Do you know someone who’s gone through a recent breakup or bereavement? If so, this Valentines could prove difficult for them. Send them a care package or take them out to dinner so they feel less isolated and remind them you’re there.

Avoid romantic triggers

If romantic movies or songs make you feel worse... ditch them! Ignore the expectation to watch romantic films on Valentines, you do what’s best for you. If you want to binge watch a nature documentary series or the latest drama, then you do that.

Look after yourself

If Valentine’s is a day that’s going to bring up a lot of unpleasant feelings, make sure to take extra care of yourself that day. Cook your favourite meal, take a nap, have a long bath... anything that makes you feel good.

These are just few tips on how to cope with Valentine’s loneliness, remember to take care of yourself and reach out to others if you need it.
